SIR: So Victoria Square is costing £40,000 a year to repair and has led to the Council paying out a further £50,000 in compensation for injuries sustained by the public (BEN, August 19). Taken over the four year period the total cost reaches the staggering amount of £210,000 for a Precinct which has not been in place any time at all.

Recently the Council proposed to reconstruct the Precinct at a cost of a further £1 million, and it seems that this will now get the go-ahead irrespective of other pressing issues such as the closing of old people's homes. Council Tax payers must ask who is responsible for this colossal waste of their money. The answer is the Bolton Labour Council and their Technical Services Department. Losses on this scale, £2.2million including the cost of the original scheme cannot be tolerated.

I feel most strongly that a statement from the Council Leader is called for detailing what action is to be taken.
