SIR: I was pleased to read in the BEN that there may be a documentary on BBC about Militia men called up in 1939. They were to serve six months peace time training; without uniform, and only semi discipline.
History was being made, as Britain had never had conscription in peace time before. A documentary is overdue, and some time ago the BBC had a documentary titled "Events Leading to World War 11". This was presented by Charles Wheeler, and I wrote to the BBC to criticise it as no mention was made of the Militia men.
I think pre war, militia was the most significant event as there was only one group of men registered. I got no reply from the BBC, perhaps one is not allowed to criticise a man of his stature.
