SINCE the price of school meals was raised by the Government recently from 9p to 12p, there has been a vast drop in the number of local children staying at school for lunch. This is particularly noticeable in secondary schools.

AN interesting view of local transport comes from the party of Middlesex boys and girls now visiting the town. The penny fare to Albert-rd., they think, "is ridiculously cheap", and at home would cost at least 3d or 4d. Tram and bus conductors also come in for praise. The cheery remarks which we in Bolton take so much for granted are novel to them, as they are accustomed to taciturn conductors taking fares without a word. To them the most striking feature of our transport system is that people are allowed to stand on the buses, which is a thing of the past in the London district.

THIS morning, shortly before nine o'clock, a melancholy accident occurred to Andrew Delamere, joiner, of Back Tipping-street, Little Bolton, who was engaged for Messrs. Elkie and Hinchcliffe, on the works at the new Town Hall. He was on top of the large hall, fixing some ceiling joists to the principal beams, when the piece on which he was kneeling, it is said, gave way, and the poor fellow was precipitated upon a scaffold pole about five or six feet below the ceiling, from which he rebounded and fell upon the flooring beams, some 57 feet below the point from which he fell. He received severe scalp injuries, fatally affecting the brain, and several ribs on the left side were also broken. He was conveyed to the Infirmary by fellow workmen, but death took place in about half-an-hour.
