JOSEPH Alan Burton of Farnworth was only 16 when he first became involved with amateur theatre. A year later he was playing Jack Point in Gilbert and Sullivan'sZYeoman of the Guard.

On Wednesday, July 24, four days after his 66th birday, he wants to celebrate by having an "everyone's welcome to sing in it" version ofZThe GondoliersZat Our Lady of Lourdes, Farnworth.

Alan, currently MD and treasurer for Our Lady of Lourdes, has invited many people who have been in his orchestras to play for him that night.

"Many of the best people who have played for me have agreed to come and play again, he said.

Among the other societies Alan has either played in or acted as MD or producer for since he first joined St Edmund's (now Bolton Catholic Music and Choral Society), are St Gregory's and St Catherine's both Farnworth.

From 1949 to 1953 he served in the Royal Navy and when not afloat was involved in the Plymouth Gilbert and Sullivan Society and the Keyham Male Voice choir.

Wherever he was stationed, he join in plays, revues etc.

Outside Farnworth, he has been MD for Sweetloves, All Saints, Elton, Kearsley, Radcliffe Congregational Players and St Paul's Astley Bridge.

Among his roles were Professor Higgins inZMy Fair LadyZand theZKing in the King and IZand he has a wealth of strong character parts to his credit.

"I hope there will be a good reunion on July 24," Alan said.

"Everyone is welcome to come along and sing".

The evening will start at 8 pm and there might be a nominal charge to cover expenses. Anyone intererested in joining in should telephone Alan on 01204 407198.
