BOLTON police are being given the money to recruit special constables from the ranks of the unemployed.

Home Office funding for the project has now been secured and the scheme is supported by Bolton and Bury training and Enterprise Council as part of the 'Quest For Jobs' scheme.

Insp Peter Holden, who is in charge of the project, said a training package had been put together and there was now a need to get the scheme up and running.

"We had some limited initial response but what we need now is people to come forward to join this scheme," said Insp Holden.

There will be a £10 training allowance on top of unemployment benefits and when on duty, specials will receive expenses. Apart from the financial incentive, recruits will be able to work towards a Level 3 NVQ in Customer Care.

"This obviously give candidates a greater sense of self-esteem and personal achievement," said Insp Holden.

"The dedication and discipline which is required by special constables, together with NVQ must make them more attractive candidates to prospective employees."

Specials can be involved in many aspects of police work from pounding the beat to policing soccer matches, festivals and demonstrations.

The police are looking for about 20 recruits to patrol the town during the day when many serving members of the Special Constabulary have work commitments.

Potential recruits must be aged 19 to 50, in good health and of good character. Anyone interested should contact Gill Davies of Bolton and Bury Tech, Clive House, Clive Street, Bolton or ring 01204 397350, or their local Job Centre.
