THE mass trespass on Smithills Moor 100 years ago opened up some of Bolton's most beautiful moorland to the public.

If it had not been for the 10,000 protesters who marched over to Belmont, that land could have been kept for the enjoyment of a favoured few.

Bolton Council leisure chiefs are right to prepare a programme of events to mark the centenary of the mass trespass. It's a milestone well worth celebrating.
