A GLOWING torrent of lava is threatening a village at the foot of the erupting Mount Etna in Sicily. The lava was today pouring on a 50-yards-wide front down Etna's slopes destroying everything in its path. It is only a mile from the village of Fornazzo, where the 2,000 inhabitants were reported to be selling their land at low prices.

THE Government today launched a nationwide campaign for voluntary recruitment for the regular forces. The Prime Minister said: "If Britain is to play her part in building a secure world peace we must be in a position to carry through our commitment overseas and to give full support to the United Nations. We cannot do these things if we are weak. Good intentions are not enough. The forces of peace must be powerful."

THE opening of the Belmont Bleachworks was celebrated on Saturday at the house of Mr Adam Holme, the Wrights Arms, Belmont, when upwards of 150 of the workmen and friends sat down to a dinner, the quality and abundance characterising which reflected the highest character upon the caterer. At the close of the dinner, the company adjourned to a spacious room in the bleachworks, where a ball, spiritedly conducted, wound up the evening's proceedings. The entire cost of the festivity was borne by E.C. Deakin, Esq., the occupier of the works.
