Little Hulton United clinched the Manchester League Premier Division title with a game to spare.

But, typical of the way that Steve Vychinski's side has gone about its task this season, there was to be no going through the motions in the final game.

Gylchrist Cup finalists (and as it turned out on Monday - winners!) BICC away - as tough a proposition as has faced United all through the successful championship campaign.

Motivation is seldom a problem when Little Hulton pride is at stake and that is a formidable weapon to have in the armoury.

A highly professional showing, one of many over the last few months, earned a superb 3-2 nail-biting victory. Vychinski's side is based upon the perfect blend of youth and experience and veteran Dave Lees got his name on the scoresheet yet again with the customary deadly finish from the penalty spot and 'relative' youngster Tony Bolton rounded off a fine personal season with two cracking goals.

Vychinski commented: "We have had a great season. Starting by picking up the Charity Cup, we have gone on to achieve what this club has been striving for for years - the Manchester League title. It is a tremendous achievement.

"In addition, our veterans' side has also done the Bolton Sports Federation league and cup double for the third year in succession. The atmosphere at the club is second-to-none and our last few home games attracted incredible support.

"Each game the attendance seemed to grow. One hundred and fifty, 160 and finally around 200 local people cheering us on. It was a magnificent feeling and they played a large part in getting us through.

"Being presented with the trophy was one of the best moments of my life. We had worked so hard for it and thoroughly deserved it.

"All the players have done so well and it's great for people like Mick and Elsie Blood who have been with the club for years. With the actual team, John Wardle and Chris McKay have been a great help to me and we have had a great team spirit."

"Winning the championship is a top honour but it put it into perspective for me when I had a close look at the actual trophy. It is the original Manchester League Challenge Cup dating back from 1893. The names on there in the very early days include Newton Heath (later Manchester United), Oldham Athletic, Stockport County and United A team when, I am told, the team captain picking up the Cup was none other than Duncan Edwards!

"Now that just shows you what exhalted company we are in! As of now that trophy has the name of LITTLE HULTON UNITED on it!"
