SPY cameras are being installed in some Bolton primary schools in a bid to curb crime.

The planning go ahead has been given by council chiefs for security cameras at Longsight CP School, Harwood and St James's CE primary school at Farnworth.

Education chiefs have revealed that there are more schemes in the pipeline as schools take steps to make buildings safer following the Dunblane tragedy. Mr Ted Fielding, Bolton education department's assistant manager for school buildings, said: "Obviously schools are more concerned about security after Dunblane, although some were planned before that.

"Security cameras are not ideal in every school, but in some it is a good way of stopping break-ins and vandal attacks.

"After Dunblane, schools are putting locks on some entrances, but it is a delicate balance because they have to make sure there are adequate means of escape if there is a fire.

"Many schools are also looking at the idea of a central reception area where all visitors have to check in."

Council chiefs are also planning to install cameras at secondary schools which are open to the public as dual use sports centres.
