SIR: Bolton Wanderers have always been a notably effective footballing team; their battle-weary players having brought 'honour' to the game and 'glory' to the old milltown!

Their regular fans are probably as proud of Bolton now as yesteryear's fans were when the Wanderers beat West Ham 2-0 in the first (1923) Wembley FA Cup Final, with goals from J R Smith and David Jack.

The atmosphere around Westhoughton, Farnworth, Barrow Bridge, Ainsworth, Turton, Horwich, Halliwell, Little Hulton, Little Lever and Great Lever must have been electric!

The spinners, piecers, weavers, shopkeepers, publicans and colliers would have been jubilant! The Lancashire side had 'slammed' West Ham.

What would the score have been if 'The Lion of Vienna' had been old enough to join the 1923 team?
