AN elderly guest who found herself locked in a small hotel was rescued from the roof after trying to get out through a third floor window.

The daring woman tried to climb down from her bedroom after waking early to find all the doors locked in the Bury town centre Clarence Hotel.

She clambered through the window with her overnight bags then got stuck on a flat roof on the second floor of the Silver Street hotel.

Firefighters rescued the woman after a passer-by heard her shouts for help.

Hotel management knew nothing about the drama until they found her keys on the doormat with the mail an hour later.

Landlady Linda Winter would not name the woman, who was from York, but confirmed: "Yes, we lost a lady in the night. We wondered what had happened to her when we saw the keys had been posted through the letterbox.

"We could not understand how she got out because everything is locked up. People usually tell us if they want to leave before the pub opens at about 11 am but she did not say anything

"I cannot understand why she did not bang on the door, she knew we live on the top floor. I expect she was trying to reach the fire escape on the second floor and got stuck.

"It's a bit of a mystery why we did not hear the commotion. I am a bit deaf but my husband can usually hear a pin a drop."
