AN OFF duty policeman cycling to work was punched in the face by a motorist in a fit of road rage.

PC Bob Lane received a split lip from the angry driver after stopping in the road to remonstrate about an earlier incident. The motorist in a light blue Mercedes stopped his car, marched back to PC Lane shouted abuse and punched him.

He then walked back to his car and drove off. The incident happened at about 1.40pm yesterday along Spa Road, Bolton. PC Lane had been travelling to work, at Bolton Central Police Station, with colleague, WPC Maggie Ashton.

WPC Ashton was almost knocked off her bike when the Mercedes initially drove past the pair. PC Lane stopped in the road to remonstrate after the driver and it was then that the motorist exploded with road rage. The car carried either a private or foreign number plate with three letters and four numbers.
