WIGAN have been stunned by a transfer request from their Great Britain winger, Jason Robinson.

The 21-year-old asked for a move after talks about improving his contract, which runs out at the end of June 1997, broke down.

He is due to join the Australian Rugby League on a four-year £1million deal when his Central Park contract expires, but is now believed to be having second thoughts about going Down Under.

Wigan chairman Jack Robinson commented: "We are very, very disappointed that Jason has asked for a move.

"I spoke to him yesterday and he said he wanted to leave the club because he was so disappointed with what we had offered him. "So far his transfer request is verbal, so I have asked him to put it in writing. When we receive his letter, we shall have to call a board meeting to discuss the situation."

Robinson surprisingly played against Castleford last Sunday. A day earlier, club officials had said that he was unlikely to play because he was not in the right frame of mind after their contract discussions.

Wigan are still waiting for a decision from their Great Britain prop, Kelvin Skerrett, with whom they had talks earlier this week about his future.

Last week they said they would let him go and Warrington made a bid to sign the Wales forward, but yesterday they pulled out of the chase.
