THE adrenalin surged through Gigg Lane today with the realisation that they can be promoted at Darlington on Saturday, writes NEIL BONNAR.

A rush for the remaining half of their 1,200 allocation was expected to begin today after last night's stirring victory at Scunthorpe set up an mouthwatering clash at their promotion rivals.

Defeat for Plymouth at Hereford last night means that Bury will secure their place in the Second Division if they get the three points in the North East and Plymouth and Wigan fail to win at Leyton Orient and Fulham.

And the sizzling Shakers - who can equal their highest ever tally of away wins of 12 in a season on Saturday - have also now got one eye on the title after slips by favourites Gillingham and Preston put Stan Ternent's men within reach of silverware. Two stunning second half strikes by Michael Jackson and David Johnson carried Bury to their tenth win in 14 matches and to the brink of the Second Division.

But manager Stan Ternent refuses to think further than Saturday's game.

"It's not mathematically certain that we are going up and until it is we will not rest."
