SIR: I am amazed that the Institute of Directors, supposedly business leaders, tell us that education needs improving, especially when these self-same directors "rather nonchalantly" let the miserable Tory government axe schools without a "whisper" of criticism or a "voiced" concern! It seems rather comical that the IOD want grammar schools back!
In the early 1970s many grammar schools like Hindley and Abram GS were forced to accept high school status. Fights to preserve the latin teaching grammars were mostly lost. Exoduses had descended on London, to no avail.
We had a right battle in this particular part of Lancashire trying to stop the 1990s closures of noted high schools like Leigh St Mary's, Whitley, Aspull and Hindley Park!
Needless to say, the Conservatives ensured that all the schools closed and now most of the schooland is built on!
