RED Indian totem poles will be springing up in Bolton throughout the summer.

But it won't be the faces of Hiawatha or Big Chief Sitting Bull which will be carved in wood.

Instead they could feature local heroes...such as Wanderers' star John McGinlay or steeplejack Fred Dibnah.

The totem poles will be designed by community groups throughout the Deane, Derby and Daubhill areas.

And they will be displayed on open spaces near local community centres creating a trail throughout the area.

The project is part of a South Bolton community festival called "On the Park."

There will be a series of "mini festivals" which will culminate in a "day of celebration" at the King George V playing fields, Deane on Sunday, July 14.

Mr Jon Lord, from Bolton's housing department, one of the organisers, explained: "The idea of totem poles came from idea that a trail of them could be created in the area.

"But we want to get away from the Red Indian idea and we want the decorations to reflect local culture.

"For example, there could be a mill chimney on it or it could have a Bolton Wanderers' theme."

Local people will design the totem poles and they will be etched by a local wood carver.
