VANDALS went on a wrecking spree hurling bricks through nine windows at a Horwich primary school.

And St Mary's RC School caretaker Bill Rae has condemned what he described as the worst vandal attack he has seen in more than a decade in the job.

Fees for boarding up and replacing the windows look set to cost over £2,000 and Mr Rae said: "I have never seen anything like it before. It was a scene of devastation when I walked in."

Repairs were completed early today as pupils returned from their Easter holidays to the Victoria Road school.

Mr Rae, and a cleaner, worked through Monday and yesterday to clear shards of glass which had been scattered around classrooms. He said: "I think people need to be made aware what is going on. Somebody must know who has done this."

The attack happened between Saturday night and Monday morning.

Detectives are investigating the incident and anyone with information is asked to contact Horwich police on 0161 872 5050.
