Wanderers will know early next week whether they are in with a shout of signing Sheffield United striker Nathan Blake.
They have upped their offer for the Welsh international after having a £750,000 bid rejected and new Blades boss Howard Kendall says he will consider it over the weekend.
"The deal is not dead," Burnden boss Roy McFarland said today. "The ball is back in their court and they want time to think about it."
Wanderers could face competition from Nottigham Forest if Kendall decides to cash in on his top scorer.
