Widnes 23 Wigan 28

(after extra-time) WIGAN have managed a few great escapes in their time but none more dramatic than Saturday's Regal Trophy quarter-final success.

With just 10 minutes remaining the holders were down by 12 points and a shock exit looked on the cards.

But they stormed back in the style that has made them worthy champions over the years. They drew level to force the game into extra-time, where they eventually squeezed their way into the semis.

A relieved Martin Hall had nothing but praise for the first division side: "Widnes played as if they were a Super League team. They were very strong. Fortunately we had the players in our team to do the job."

Widnes were inspired, while Wigan, after taking the lead with a brilliant solo effort from Rob Smyth after just two minutes, were never allowed to play their natural game.

Fortunately they had Henry Paul and Va'aiga Tuigamala in their ranks to produce the magic when it was needed most.

"Those two played their socks off," said coach Graeme West of the Kiwis performances.

After Wigan's sensational start a cake-walk looked on, but Widnes hauled themselves back into the game and by half-time led 8-4 with a Paul Hulme try and two Christian Tyrer penalties.

When Mark Pechey scored a try and Tyrer added another couple of goals a shock win looked likely, but Wigan suddenly realised the urgency of the situation.

Scott Quinell stormed in for a try and with five minutes remaining Tuigamala went over, Andy Farrell landing both attempts.

Despite the late rally Widnes bounced back again in extra-time when Darren Wright darted over and Tyrer added the goal and a drop goal.

But Wigan's dynamic Kiwis took control to see the Riversiders home safe. Tuigamala started a move and finished it by scoring in the corner. He then broke clear to allow Paul to send Smyth in before Gary Connolly finally sealed Widnes' fate.
