HANDCARTS, ropes and axes are being used in the great trek for firewood by the school population. Even the municipal election, usually a source of fun for the young folk, failed to interrupt the feverish preparations that are going on to celebrate Guy Fawkes Day this year. Instead of taking the edge off their enthusiasm for fires, the VE and VJ Day celebrations have whetted the appetites of Bolton children, but they have found fuel harder to come by as a consequence. EXPRESS TO BOLTON

A number of gentlemen holding contract tickets between Bolton and Manchester, and who are engaged in business in the latter place daily, are endeavouring to induce the directors of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway to put on an evening express to Bolton, so as to enable them after leaving business to get at once to their homes.

Six o'clock was at first suggested, but it has been urged that this would be too soon, as business only closes at that hour; 6.20 is therefore proposed in its stead. According to the present arrangement it is nearly 7.30 before gentlemen can reach home.
