l AN 18-year-old Whitefield youth who was seen taking a pair of knickers off a washing line was given a 12-month conditional discharge at Bury Court. He was ordered to pay £11.50 in compensation and £35 costs.

l THIEVES stole £1,000 worth of silver trophies from a showcase at Prestwich High School, although they left the less expensive ones behind.

l A CHRISTMAS Bonanza was held by the 19th Prestwich (St. Andrews) Scout Group and sigma venture unit at the Rainsough Schoolroom, Kersal Road. Stalls and games attracted a good crowd and proceeds went to group funds.

l TWENTY-year-old Graham McEvoy, principal euphonium of Besses o th Barn Band, was the new British brass solo champion. Graham,a bank clerk, won the title in the solo and quartet championship at Oxford. He also lifted the prize for the best euphonium player.
