I AM afraid that correspondent C Johnstone is wrong in several respects regarding the Lancashire/Greater Manchester debate.

I think you will find that the postal address is still Bolton, Lancs. I don't think the Post Office has any axe to grind in this respect and will accept whatever as long as the postcode is correct, but also note that the postcode starts BL not M.

I have looked in my AA 2005 Road Atlas for the reference to our town and cannot find any reference to a Greater Manchester boundary on that or in Ordnance Survey maps.

I made the point regarding the lazy media in my previous letter, and, since most of it around here is based in Manchester, it suits their purposes to maintain that fantasy county.

As to the road signs - the sign at the foot of Scout Road on Belmont Road is a relic of that ill-fated county and, like that county, appears to be falling down.

By all means let us move on, C Johnstone.

Greater Manchester County was a lousy concept in 1974, and has not improved with the passage of time. Yes, let us move on with the individual towns around Manchester, and the city, itself recognised as being autonomous parts of our historic county of Lancashire.
