A BREWERY has caused a storm over the naming of its latest pub.

Pathfinder Pub's super new hostelry at the entrance to the new Gadbury Fold housing development at the Atherton end of the Atherleigh by-pass has been named The Talbot - a label which residents feel has nothing to do with the area.

Now they are formulating battle plans to get the brewery to have a change of heart and alter the name to something more in keeping - like The Gadbury, The Gadbury Arms or even The Brickyard.

The pub, which opened last week and features old aerial pictures of the area and photos of its industrial past, has been given the thumbs up, except for the inappropriate name.

Alison and Ian Barton, of Gadbury Auto Salvage, said no-one can figure out why the pub has been named The Talbot which is not at all in keeping with the area.

Alison said: "If the company had done their research they would have come up with a more suitable name .The pub is built on land of the former Gadbury brick yard, the roundabout entrance to the development is where Gadbury bridge used to be and they demolished Gadbury Fold Farm to make way for houses and the pub.

"Locals know this area as Gadbury so a name more in keeping should have been found."

Alison said she had contacted the brewery but had not had a reply.

She said: "I know it might seem petty to some but we, the locals, like to keep the local area and its past alive. The Talbot is a stupid name and everyone we have spoken to is willing to sign a petition to the brewery asking them to change it. The feeling is very strong. Lets hope theyll listen."

I have to agree the company could have given more thought to the naming of the pub, so I contacted Pathfinder's commercial manager Simon Miller.

He said the company had spent a lot of time and money believing the pub was right, and often use middle of the road names for pubs so as not to upset anybody.

However there could be hope on the horizon - he's promised to see what can be done and is considering the options.
