THE past year has seen terrible natural disasters such as the tsunami in Asia and the Pakistani earthquake, which together with the acts of terrorism in London, could lead to a feeling of despair in every decent minded person.

But the magnificent and generous response of the Bolton public has been both heart-warming and restorative of one's faith in the goodness of the human spirit.

Whilst in many parts of the country evil voices attempted to create racial and religious division; here in Bolton inspired by the positive example of that true Boltonian, Amir Khan, our multi-cultural and multi-faith family remained solid and indivisible.

Here in a town of which I am tremendously proud to be Mayor, we have lived the true spirit of Christmas each day of the past year; which is peace and goodwill to all, irrespective of race, creed or colour.

These values are the respected tenants of all the great faiths represented in our town and our united task is to live up to that.

Could I ask that in the spirit of Christmas we continue not to forget those less fortunate than ourselves.

If you know of someone who is lonely, bereaved, homeless or in desperate circumstances; then please remember the Bethlehem story of a homeless family living in a stable and, like the innkeeper, extend the hand of friendship.

In Pakistan this year thousands still seek comfort and refuge, many are part of the extended Bolton family; a contribution to my Earthquake Appeal will help them considerably and truly reflect the message of Christmas.

On behalf of my wife Eileen and myself may I wish all residents of the greatest town in England, a very Happy Christmas and a peaceful, healthy and prosperous New Year.

Councillor Frank R White

Mayor of Bolton
