A STUDENT threatened with deportation to a war torn country has released a CD to bring a festive cheer to campaigners battling to keep her in the country.

Flores Sukula, aged 19, has compiled a CD called Open the Eyes of My Heart Lord, featuring gospel music, in time for Christmas.

Since arriving in Bolton nearly three years ago with her family, Flores has entertained audiences with her voice at various community functions.

The CD featuring three tracks - Open the Eyes of My Heart Lord, Shout for the Lord and I Give You My Heart - was recorded at the studios of Harmony Youth Project in Halliwell on the charity's own label HyperRecords with the help of musician Tony Sebankskis.

Flores, who attends Bolton Sixth Form College, said: "It was very exciting recording the CD. It was great to have the opportunity to do something like this. I would love to be a singer.

"I started working on it months ago, but because of the campaign it has taken a while. It is my way of celebrating Christmas."

Charlie Barrett, founder and project leader, said: "Flores has an amazing voice. Since coming to the studios, young people have learned at lot from her, about her plight and what she is still going through. We are hoping she will do more voluntary work with us in the future."

The CD is on sale for £5, with all proceeds going towards the "Let them Stay" campaign, which is being backed by the Bolton Evening News.

Flores arrived in Britain with her family at the beginning of 2002 after they fled from political persecution in the war-torn Democratic Republic of Congo.

Her family, who live in Netherfield Road, Great Lever, found out at the end of last year that their claim for asylum had been rejected.

Now the family face being deported back to their former homeland.
