LEIGH MP Andy Burnham has launched a military campaign.

He hopes to raise awareness of a lapel badge to which WW1 and 2 veterans are entitled in recognition of the sacrifice they made.

He said: "Sixty years on from the end of VE Day, it's right that we make sure the service personnel who kept Britain free are recognised for the contribution they have made to our country and their community.

"I am pleased that the Ministry of Defence will now award an impressive new veteran's badge."

Those entitled to receive the badge include men and women who served in the UK Armed Forces in the First World War, the interwar years, the Second World War and between 1945 and December 31 1954. Other groups who served in WW2 including the Cyprus Regiment, Home Guard and Polish Forces under UK command, War widows and widowers who are receiving a war pension also qualify as do Merchant Navy seamen who saw active service as part of a military operation.

Application forms are available from Mr Burnham's Market Street, Leigh, office or contact 01942 248958.
