I WHOLEHEARTEDLY agree with Tony Backhouse (Bolton Evening News, December 5) over Europe, and the most recent letter by Barry Sansome.

The Newport Street bridge is, as one correspondent described, "a huge white elephant".

I was recently in that area, and the so-called bridge reminds me of the two arched sabres just outside of Baghdad.

Nobody wanted this bridge, but as we all know we never have a say on these matters the dustbin fiasco being a good example.

Barry Sansome's idea of a skating rink was great. I have mentioned this before, as I enjoyed the Navada on the occasions I attended it 40 years ago. Surely some nostalgia should not go amiss for middle aged "swingers".

I am always angered at the council spending millions for white elephants and unwanted changes. Yet some in the planning department break out in a cold sweat if they think a developer is going to appeal.

Well what if they do! It's our money not theirs!
