ENGLAND'S disappointing Test performances in Pakistan have been enough to dampen the enthusiasm of the keenest cricket aficionados but not the hardy players of Brooksbottoms and Elton Vale (formerly Bolton Road Methodists)!

For the 43rd consecutive winter the two local teams will, whatever the conditions, turn out on Boxing Day (Monday) to battle it out for the Brian Statham Trophy.

Over the years, snow, ice, fog and heavy rain have conspired to prevent play but the cricketers have won each time to the delight of the crowds who traditionally support the unique contest.

Brooksbottoms' Rowlands Road ground, Summerseat is the venue for this year's game.

To help prevent exposure setting in, every player must bowl a maximum of two overs apiece, which adds a little more uncertainty and fun to the occasion.

The East Lancashire Railway are running steam Santa Special trains from Bury that pass through the village and once again there will be seasonal refreshments for those who didn't overdo things the previous day!

Wickets are pitched at 11am for the 20-over a side encounter and all spectators are welcome.
