Boro Under 15s met Clarence in the quarter final of the North Bury Junior League Cup and, in a hard fought match, gained revenge for their league defeat earlier in the season.

From the start both sides battled to try to impose themselves on the match but found it difficult to penetrate well organised defences.

Mark Lester almost brought the breakthrough but his rising drive from the right hand side of the box cleared the crossbar.

David Eccles then saw his chip from an angle brilliantly tipped over the bar when it seemed destined for the far top corner.

Clarence matched Boro attack for attack but were limited mainly to long range shooting which Ryan McDonald dealt with comfortably, though he had to be at his best to keep out one low drive.

Boro took the lead after about 15 minutes when good work by Alex Nadler and Ryan Dillon saw the ball worked into the danger zone where Eccles battled to win it for Greg Davies to steer into the corner of the net.

Both sides forced a number of corners without success but it was Boro who came nearest to scoring again when Nadler was sent racing through on the left, sending his shot just wide of the far post as the keeper narrowed the angle. The second half proved to be as competitive as the first.

Clarence started strongly, looking dangerous without creating clear- cut chances.

Boro, however, proved to be more incisive, Nadler bursting through to strike a ferocious low drive from twenty yards ,forcing a tremendous save from the Clarence keeper.

Good work from Nadler then led to Rafi Leker crossing for Davies to race in and rocket a header into the net for his and Boro's second.

The visitors were now struggling to contain Boros pace and movement. Davies sent Eccles racing through on the right only for him to see his shot beat the keeper but drift wide of the far post, and both Leker and Davies fired wide from inside the area. Boro's third came fifteen minutes into the half.

Eccles chipped in an excellent centre which Nadler headed against a defender, Leker following up to crash an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net from near the penalty spot.

Clarence refused to lie down and struck back with a classic counterattack following a Boro corner, the visitors capitalising on a fortunate break to race clear in numbers.

Ryan McDonald pulled off a great save but a Clarence forward was first to the rebound to reduce the deficit. Clarence now threw everything into attack and Boro needed to defend resolutely to prevent a second goal.

The visitors created a number of half chances but their shooting wasn't accurate enough to unduly trouble McDonald.

Boro, however, continued to cut through the Clarence rearguard with some excellent passing.

Simon Glynn's intelligent free kick was reached by Eccles at full stretch but his shot went inches past the far post. Eccles came even closer when he volleyed Dillon's corner against the underside of the crossbar only for it to crash down just the wrong side of the goal line.

The score remained at 3 - 1, Boro achieving a well deserved victory.

Simon Glynn and Nick Mitchell gave outstanding performances in the heart of defence and Scott Evans got through a tremendous amount of work in midfield as Boro moved through to the semi-final of the competition.
