EAST HULL 0, LEIGH MINERS RANGERS 16 by Jeff Gorse: Leigh Miners Rangers moved into second place in the league with one of the results of the season, defeating previous incumbents of second spot East Hull in outstanding fashion at Rosmead Street.

With the Humbersiders having thrashed Miners in the reverse fixture, revenge was very much on the mind of Winston Sarsfield's side, but in terms of the bigger picture, this scoreline could prove a seminal moment in the season for the team in their quest to retain the Minor Premiership.

After an error and penalty free opening twenty, Miners broke the deadlock when Alan Reddicliffe broke clear and fed the outstanding John Woods, who rounded the fullback with ease for a try improved by Martyn Ridyard. A Ridyard penalty and field goal were the only other scores before the break as Miners led 9-0.

Some outstanding defence was required as Easts tried everything to cross the whitewash after the break, with Chris Humphreys a rock in defence, holding centre Fairfield over the line when a try seemed inevitable.

After Ridyard added another field goal Humphreys delivered the coup de grace, his try sealing matters and a famous victory.

Miners move up to second with a massive game against Wigan St Pats, the leaders, to come on January 7 at Twist Lane.
