AS schools and colleges in the borough close for the Christmas holidays, police have launched a major crackdown on underage drinking.

Officers will be stepping up patrols in and around the town centres to curb anti-social behaviour over the festive period, and a high profile police presence will be provided in areas where young people congregate, such as bus and Metrolink stations.

Street drinking bans will be reinforced and anyone found drinking underage will have the alcohol confiscated and £80 fines imposed.

Action will be taken against licensed premises found to be illegally selling alcohol.

Inspector Martyn Stanhope, of Bury Police, said: "This operation is aimed at preventing and disrupting underage drinking and youth nuisance, but we also, want to offer reassurance to the general public and send a clear message to offenders that their actions will not be tolerated."

People who drink too much and behave in a disorderly manner could face an £80 fine and/or be arrested and go before the courts for sentence.

l Christmas cards have been sent to persistent offenders across the borough who have committed crimes such as robbery and burglary. The card reads: "Looking forward to a crime free Christmas and hoping you don't find room at our Inn. From all at Bury Police."
