TOWN Hall bosses have been accused of throwing away council taxpayers' money by repainting markings on a busy Bolton road - just weeks before it was resurfaced.

Leading Tory, Cllr John Walsh, has hit out at council leaders after they admitted they will have to spend another £2,400 replacing the newly painted central lines on Chorley New Road.

Residents were angered in September when highways maintenance officers put down the new markings, only for them to be ripped up by workmen weeks later.

But, despite the councils claims at the time that the centre part of the road would not be affected by resurfacing, they now admit that the painting will have to be redone.

Cllr Walsh said: "They told us they wouldnt be wasting money and then turned around and did the very thing I had accused them of.

"Once again, it shows what small regard they have for public money.

"I am horrified and I am appalled that the council could represent me as being in the wrong and tell me I havent got my facts rights, when I was right all along."

A spokesman for the council said: "The original scheme was to carry out repairs at either side of the road near the Chorley New Road and Beaumont Road junction.

"The white lines in the centre of the road were replaced in the interests of road safety, from St George's Road to the Beehive roundabout including the Beaumont Road intersection.

"However, as the work at the junction progressed it became evident that the centre of the road also needed work doing and, of course, this meant that the newly-lined area became involved in the repairs. The work is currently being done."
