Lancashire & Cheshire Senior Colts (Under 19s) A League: Trafford took the lead with an early penalty, then went 10-0 ahead when poor Sedgley handling presented a loose ball on half-way.

A quick player in the centre did the rest.

Sedgley had plenty of ball, and no shortage of enthusiasm, but they were constantly being driven back by quick and forceful tackling.

Trafford competed strongly for every loose ball and were aggressive in contact but, eventually, Sedgley scored from an attacking scrum.

Matt Lamprey made the hard yards and Max Prashad picked up for a close-range try.

Sedgley were guilty of kicking away possession, and kicking poorly too.

The home side showed how it should be done with a long diagonal kick and enthusiastic chase.

Sedgley scrambled the ball into touch but Trafford scored from the line-out, ironically, as this was by far the worst aspect of their play.

The touchline conversion made it 17-5 at half-time.

The second half was evenly contested and there was no score until the final minute when big Matt Shaw, who had had a strong game, created the space for centre Aaron McDaid to squeeze over in the corner.

Each side had scored two tries but the 17-10 final scoreline accurately reflected the home side's small but significant superiority.

Junior Colts B League (Under 17)

Sedgley faced fourth-placed West Park in frosty St Helens and began well, producing fast open running rugby straight from the kick-off.

West Park were much heavier and taller in the pack but, in the ninth minute, Sedgley won a well worked line-out on the home side's 22, allowing fly-half Paul Urmston to cross for an unconverted try.

Sedgley put themselves under pressure from the restart, allowing West Park forwards to assert their strength.

Sedgley forwards had to defend well, with good work from Dave Smith, Mark Rudd and Steve Gater allowing the back division to break out of their own try line, enabling the swift winger Nathan Settle to score out wide from 55 metres; Dominic Kohler converted.

West Park then capitalised on some shoddy, relaxed play from Sedgley.

Their tight five dominated up front, resulting in two tries, one being converted just before half-time; 12-12.

A stern team talk resulted in Sedgley standing up man-for-man, raring to go.

Some excellent rugby was being produced by both teams, exciting end-to-end play.

West Park slotted a penalty for off-side in the 51st minute, whilst Sedgley's centre Adam Glover glided over the line, finishing off a well-worked move.

Just two points behind, West Park missed a chance at goal.

With Sedgley under tremendous pressure up front, all apart from the back three gathered to defend an attacking rolling maul five metres from their own line to frustrate West Park's pack further.

Sedgley fitness and discipline shone through at the end, with a 35-metre run by Nick Edge who broke off a maul, beating four defenders for the decisive, late try.
