FORGET Kelly Holmes's exercise video, shaping up with Davina McCall or going for the burn with Nell McAndrew - the must-have fitness video for 2006 belongs to those two fine examples of modern lifestyle Max and Paddy.

Max and Paddy? A fitness workout? Yes, the dynamic duo (alias Bolton's Peter Kay and Patrick McGuinness) have their own DVD out next Tuesday called Max & Paddy's The Power of Two.

And for anyone looking to fight the festive flab, the two former bouncers have just the formula - pain, stretched Lycra, and the most unco-ordinated class of "ordinary bodies to enjoy this "extraordinary workout outside of the Phoenix Club.

The DVD is created as a TV programme in which Max and Paddy decide to make their own fitness video after viewing Coronation Street actress Beverley Callard's and dismissing it as "nambi pambi dancin'."

After all, who has a finer pedigree to make a "proper workout video than Max with his army training and Paddy with his knowledge of s-exercise?

All they need is a studio (supplied by Duggy Diamond who makes mucky films), props (Duggy's sex toys), and a class of keen fitness fans (Sue, Valerie, Sandra, Jackie and Glen Max's weight-challenged old army buddy). Add glamour girls Candice and Roxy and they could make a "shed-load of cash".

The outcome is actually an entertaining combination of a useful basic workout - courtesy of Paddy's previous life as an instructor around Bolton sports centres - and plenty of comic moments.

Suffice to say that, as Paddy gamely goes through a surprisingly sensible series of warm-ups, stretches and exercise routines, Max manages to avoid them, insult everyone and end up with an eye injury.

Nor does he appear to have got the real fitness regime message. After "filming" the video, Max's only concession to an improved lifestyle is to add a salad to his usual chicken kiev, chips, beans and fried egg.

Plenty of extras make this a good-value DVD, including Brian Potter's workout live from the Phoenix Club - including bicep curls using two cans of WD-40 as weights.

l Max & Paddy's The Power of Two costs £16.99 from HMV in Exchange Street, Bolton.
