THE European Commission has decided to stop subsidies for the export of cattle for slaughter.

Previously, farmers would be given incentives to send live cattle to the Middle East to be killed, even though the area has been deemed immensely cruel by animal charities.

Around 250,000 animals are exported by the EU each year.

But farmers will now no longer be paid incentives to send their cattle abroad.

Bolton Euro-MP Chris Davies has campaigned for the ban. He said: "Live exports are extremely cruel and all too often can expose animals to horrific slaughter methods."
