THE transfer window rumour mill is gathering momentum with Jared Borgetti and Jussi Jaaskelainen the latest members of Sam Allardyce's Premiership squad reported to be on their way out of the Reebok.

But Wanderers were quick to deny reports that Portuguese giants, Benfica, have made a move for the unsettled Mexican striker, while sources on Teesside played down speculation that Jaaskelainen would be Steve McClaren's top target if Mark Schwarzer was transfered to Portsmouth.

Boro, first and foremost, do not want to lose the Aussie keeper, who last week had a written transfer request accepted, while Schwarzer himself is understood not to fancy a move to a relegation-threatened club a year after being touted as a target for Arsenal and Manchester United.

There are a lot of bridges to be crossed before McClaren, who was taken aback by Schwarzer's request, begins the search for a new goalkeeper.

Jaaskelainen's name is in the frame because he is refusing to sign a three-year contract extension he was said to have agreed last summer. Sam Allardyce, who last week added the Oman international, Ali Al-Habsi, to his goalkeeping ranks and played Ian Walker in Saturday's FA Cup tie at Watford, admits Wanderers may choose to cash in on the 30-year-old Finn, if they fail to find a solution to the contract wrangle.

But he also insisted at the weekend that he was expecting to sign and not sell during the transfer window.

Commenting on the speculation linking the frustrated Borgetti with Benfica. a Reebok spokesman said: "We have had no contact with them."
