AN unkempt patch of land has been given a makeover with Brighter Borough funding.

Atherleigh Councillors, Anne Turnock, Mark Aldred and Susan Loudon dug into the community pot to spruce-up a site on Byron Street in Leigh.

The overgrown, rubbish-strewn site and crumbling wall we highlighted as an eyesore by locals who approached their ward representatives who promptly agreed to transform the area.

Wigan Council's engineering services department cleared the site, laid a lawn and planted trees and spring bulbs and fenced off the land from the nearby by-pass.

Councillor Anne Turnock said: "We are pleased with the results and feel the money has been well spent. The site will look really well in Spring. We have also asked the Beat it Team to make a visit towards the end of January to do an extra litter pick of the area. We were glad we could help."
