PUPILS took a step back in time to 1940s wartime Britain with the help of artist Lizzie Lockhart.

Youngsters at St Andrew's Primary School in Nuttall Lane, Ramsbottom, packed away their modern classroom equipment to recreate their own handmade suitcases packed with cherished items taking on the persona of a young Second World War evacuee.

Suitcase items included brown paper parcels, chocolate bars, complete with the original designs researched from the internet, old-fashioned teddy bears and traditional toys.

The project tied in with Year 6 history about wartime Britain and the school invited Lizzie Lockhart to guide the pupils through their 3D art project as part of Bury's Artists in Schools. Teacher Marie Graves said: "It was the first time we have had Artists in School and is something we will definitely do again."
