A TAXI driver who faked a road accident to try to claim £20,000 in compensation has appealed against his licence being withdrawn.

Sajid Iqbal (25), of Heywood Street, Bury, appeared before Bury Magistrates Court yesterday to appeal against a decision by Bury Councils Taxi Licensing Panel to revoke his licence after he was convicted of conspiring to obtain money by deception last October.

Iqbal was sentenced to 180 hours community service after he admitted lying about a road traffic accident while working as a First Bus driver.

He claimed to have been driving a bus which was involved in a collision with a Nissan Micra containing four friends and tried to claim compensation but an investigation found no accident had taken place.

The case was adjourned until February 1 for reports.
