Crompton Place shopping centre, Bolton

CROMPTON Place is to undertake a feasibility study installing solar panels and a rainwater capture system to improve its alreday green credentials.

The centre management also wants to install a building management system to monitor and automate lighting and heating to save money and to create a sustainable long term system.

Like many large businesses with lots of floor space, Crompton Place shopping centre is serious about reducing its impact on the environment.

Management began looking at what could be done to reduce the centre’s impact on the environment through reducing waste and cutting energy costs.

But to do that they had to engage all the retailers in the mall, many of whom had their own waste removal companies.

After negotiations, the centre now removes all the waste for all its tenants through its dedicated envionment team, with the cost covered by an increased charge in the service budget.

The centre bought a cardboard and plastic baler and gave all tenants branded waste/recycling containers which are removed and segregated in the service yards.

The centre has now reduced waste transport costs through recycling and achieved significant reductions in utility charges for electricty and water through a series of cost cutting measures.

Centre manager Malcolm Angus said: “We have 130,000 consumers per week with more than 45 retail partners and we have proactively embraced the environmental message coming from industry leading experts over the past two years.

“We have written and put into practice our Responsible Property Investment initiatives and we have an environmental statement and mission statement that clearly states our intentions.

“We are delighted to have been nominated for this award which recognises all the hard work over the past 12 months put in by the dedicated team here at the centre.”
