It is, by now, perfectly clear that Fabio Capello won’t be inviting any Reebok regulars to join him in South Africa. However, the 2010 World Cup doesn’t end there for the Whites. If you’re exasperated with the thought of watching England inevitably limp out on penalties and are in need of a second team, then read on. If you’re a Wanderers fan who hates internationals and want some way to make things (marginally) more fun, then read on. If you’re worried that the World Cup will leave the Wanderers’ squad shattered by injury, then read on. The Bolton News will track the fortunes of Bolton’s three contributions to the World Cup: Stuart Holden; Lee Chung-Yong; and, who could forget, Danny Shittu. Here’s a brief ramble about each to get you started:

LEE CHUNG-YONG

Team? South Korea Reebok reputation? By far the best Wanderers player at the World Cup. As Gary Megson’s parting gift to the Bolton faithful, Lee Chung-Yong is already one of the biggest talents at the club. His speed, intelligence and overall skill have led to 30 starts and 5 goals this season, including the winner against Burnley early in Owen Coyle’s tenure.

And in his neck of the woods? South Korea manager Huh Jung-Moo likes to use Lee as a right midfielder, often cutting inside to supplement bold, rapid attacks. The Koreans were unlucky to lose 1-0 to Spain in their final warm-up game, and Lee’s drive and dribbling were instrumental in many of the chances created by his team. Expect him to shine in South Africa.

Booked the plane back home yet? The glory days of Guus Hiddink are long gone, but the Koreans do have a sprinkling of Euro-centric talent that should help them better their disappointing 2006 effort. Drawn in Group B alongside Argentina, Greece and Nigeria, it’s anybody’s guess as to who will progress.

Anything else? Lee Chung-Yong has an extensive collection of Tesco Clubcard points. Fact.

STUART HOLDEN

Team? U.S.A.

Reebok reputation? After he was violently attacked outside a bar in Newcastle, the then Sunderland midfielder Holden was unable to ever make his debut at the Stadium of Light, and moved to the Reebok instead. Similar frustrations have accompanied his Bolton career; he has made only two appearances for the Whites. However, this is largely due to a leg break suffered while on international duty in March, but now the domestic season is over he’s been declared fit to represent USA in South Africa. Good for them, eh?

And in his neck of the woods? Holden has actually been compared to David Beckham, due to his versatility and crossing ability. He’s made several promising appearances for USA and scored some important goals. He didn’t feature in the most recent friendly with Australia, and is unlikely to start in South Africa, but then they said that about Trevor Sinclair.

Booked the plane back home yet? England fans will be hoping Holden doesn’t enjoy himself too much at the World Cup, but USA look likely to join England in the knockout stages, barring an heroic effort from Slovenia or Algeria.

Anything else? Holden was brought up in America, but actually born in Scotland, which gives the Scots yet another reason to root for USA against England on 12th June.

DANNY SHITTU

Team? Nigeria Reebok reputation? Shittu did not feature for the Whites this season, and is set to trot off to pastures new this summer. Turkish club Kayserispor have reportedly offered him £1m-a-year to join them, and the lumbering centre-back is unlikely to refuse in favour of staying at Bolton, where his involvement is not dissimilar to that of a season ticket holder.

And in his neck of the woods? Rather like in England, Shittu’s international career is fading. He did feature on a few occasions in the African Cup of Nations though, and his solid defensive understanding with Joseph Yobo could tempt coach Lars Lagerback to pick him.

Booked the plane back home yet? Shittu will have to entertain Leo Messi and Carlos Tevez if he does play in South Africa, as the Super Eagles face Argentina in their first game. Just as likely as South Korea or Greece to join the Argies in the knockout stages.

Anything else? Although you may have spent many an hour chuckling at Danny Shittu’s name, his Nigerian middle name ‘Olusola’ is also interesting. It means ‘god creates wealth’, but seeing as he has cost Wanderers around 200,000 per appearance, ‘Shittu takes wealth’ would perhaps be more appropriate.

From the aforementioned, Lee Chung-Yong is the player with the most impressive reputation at The Reebok. His speed, skill and intelligence were what caught Gary Megson’s eye late in 2009; attributes which have not been overlooked by South Korea manager Huh Jung-Moo. Lee slots in well to a bold, attacking formation, alongside Manchester United’s Park Ji-Sung, and
