MARTIAL ARTS: JUDO supremo Matt Clempner is aiming for one of his proteges to make it to the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Clempner, who runs Bolton Judokwai from Horwich Leisure Centre, is the North West area technical director for the UK Judo body and his club is a recognised skills centre alongside only two others in the region at Merseyside and Kendal.

His own 24-year-old son, also Matt, has represented Great Britain in major events and he won last year’s world championship in Rotterdam.

He has alswo won six national titles at five different weight categories, winning his first at the age of 14.

Clempner is currently prevented from training by an ankle injury but, although his dad says Olympic qualification is a tall order, he should go for it.

Meanwhile, Clempner is also talking up the prospects of other students under his care, including brother and sister Andrew Kenyon, aged 20 and Jennifer Kenyon, aged 24.

Clempner’s 27-year-old daughter Laura is also in the frame as is national schools champion Tom Birkett, aged 13.
