PENNINE Telecom was a finalist at the Bolton and Bury Business Awards four years ago — but this time scooped the top prize in the Design, Technology and Innovation Award.

The Bury company has proved to be an innovator and not an imitator by continually extending its expertise in an ever-changing communications world.

Managing director Andrew Roberts said he was “delighted” to have won the Innovation and Design Award this time round.

He said: “The project that we put forward was a strong project for Broad Oak High School in Bury involving WiFi.

“We must thank the school and Bury Council. We were in the final four years ago so to win this time, against tough competition is very pleasing.”

The company’s technical capabilities and willingness to invest, allied to its application of wireless technologies, have earned praise and respect in what is a cut-throat market.

Established in 1976, the Salford Street business is a leading independent provider of telecommunications nationwide. Pennine has grown from a two-way radio supplier to develop into a total communications solution provider.

Its extensive portfolio incorporates four core product sets, embracing telephone, radio, wireless and data. Proud of its enviable reputation within the telecoms industry, the firm works closely with suppliers to ensure they are ahead in a fast-paced market.

Wireless is a growing specialism and Pennine offers a number of WiFi services. Among landmark installations, the company has pioneered the first community wireless network operated by an English school. Installed on behalf of Bury’s Broad Sports College, it provides free home broadband access to more than 1,000 student households.

Other clients to have benefited from Pennine’s expertise include Bury Council, the Fusilier Museum, Bury’s Mill Gate shopping centre and Hopwood Hall College.

The company, which has a 65-strong workforce, recently secured one of its biggest contracts valued at £1 million.

This year’s Award was sponsored jointly by the University of Bolton and the Hakim Group.
