ANDREW Strauss’s match-winning knock of 87 against Australia at Old Trafford proved there is a place in England’s flourishing limited overs team for the more orthodox player.

While man-of-the-moment Craig Kieswetter was back in the pavilion for a golden duck, after failing miserably to deal with Shaun Tait’s express pace, Strauss’s technique allowed him to ride out the new ball and construct an innings.

The England captain played some eye-catching shots all around the wicket with his uncomplicated style and calm demeanor allowing flair players like Kevin Pietersen and Eoin Morgan to go about their business with little pressure.

There are times when the going is tough and runs are hard to come by – and that is when you need a solid technique to fall back upon and Test-quality players like Strauss are worth their weight in gold.
