WHILE the rest of the arts world might be gearing up for the Edinburgh Fringe, in Manchester they are preparing for their own annual theatre festival with a twist.

The 24:7 Theatre Festival (no relation) was set up seven years ago by actor David Slack, and has exploded so much in popularity that this year hundreds of scripts were received by writers hoping to fill just 10 slots.

Each play is no longer than an hour, and each will be performed at New Century House, in Manchester, during the festival’s run from July 26 to August 1.

The 10 productions are The Bluest Blue, The Fading Hum, Hatch, The Inconsistent Whisper of Insanity, Islanders, Make Believe, No View From The Window, Pawn, Reeling and Sheepish. Between them they deal with subjects ranging from predatory traffic wardens to wardens on the remote Farne Islands, disappearing bees to absentee fathers.

They will also be hosting a short film night on Wednesday, July 28, presenting three short film premières from local writers and directors including Acid Burn by scriptwriter Matt Greenhalgh, Resting by actors William Ash and Andrew Knott and Master Motivator by producerJanet Harrison.
