A POPULAR and “inspirational” teacher at one of Bolton’s leading schools has been found dead at his home.

Andrew McNally, aged 28, a drama teacher at Canon Slade School in Bradshaw, was found in his flat in St George’s Street, Bolton.

His shock death was announced to pupils yesterday — the last day of term. Some broke down in tears after hearing the news.

Staff had been told the day before.

Mr McNally was found hanged at his flat — and police have confirmed there were no suspicious circumstances.

Permission was given for youngsters to leave classes and spend time in the chapel if they wished. Counselling is being offered to the pupils following the tragedy. Letters have also been sent to parents outlining the support available to pupils who have been left devastated by Mr McNally’s death.

Mr McNally, originally from Newcastle, had been teaching for three years, the last two at Canon Slade. His other school was Cardinal Langley Roman Catholic in Middleton.

Canon Slade’s headteacher, Philip Williamson, paid tribute to the young teacher.

He said: “It is with great sadness that Canon Slade School reports the death of Andrew McNally.

“Mr McNally was found dead at his home on the morning of July 22.

“He was an inspirational teacher and much liked and respected by pupils and colleagues.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, his close friends and all who loved and admired him.”

Parents who contacted The Bolton News described Mr McNally as a popular teacher who was much loved by the children.

Mr McNally lived by himself and is believed to have been single.

A police spokesman said: “Shortly before 9.40am on Thursday, July 22, police were called to a block of flats on St George’s Street, Bolton, following reports a man had been found hanged.

“Officers attended and discovered the body of a 28-year-old man.

“There are no suspicious circumstances and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”

Entitled R.I.P ANDY MCNALLY, the introduction reads: “We will always miss you and no matter what is said you have made an influence on all of our lives. rip Mr McNally. 22nd July 2010”.
