HUNDREDS of people donned a single red sock and headed to the Bolton Lads and Girls Club to run a mile for charity.

Almost 500 runners, aged between three and 90, braved the heat and took part in Sport Relief on Saturday.

Some were in fancy dress, others cycled or kicked a football round the course.

Jerry Glover, chief executive of the Lads and Girls Club, said: "It was an absolutely fantastic day and the turnout couldn't have been better.

"We had a wide age range taking part, and a Dalmatian dog even joined in!

"I'm pleased Bolton has made such a significant contribution to the £12 million raised nationally and I'd like to thank all the staff at the club for all their hard work."

One of the youngest runners in Bolton's Sport Relief mile was three-year-old Robert Seddon of Briarfield, Egerton.

He said: "I ran it because I want to help all the boys and girls by raising money for them. I really like running and it's a lot of fun."

Eight-year-old Isabella Smith, a Bolton School pupil from Belmont, said: "I decided to do it because we were going to do the Race For Life, but couldn't and we really wanted to do something for charity."

Dozens of people from the Lads and Girls Club took part in the mile, including members of the Independence Group, which helps people with learning disabilities.

Independence Group member Julian Lodge, aged 25, of Westhoughton, said: "It's good fun and I've loved doing it. I have been training for it, and I kicked a football round the course."

All the competitors were able to claim their second sock once they completed the mile.

Pupils and staff at Spindle Point School, Kearsley, donned their red socks and did a mile for Sport Relief on Wednesday.

They raised more than £400 for the charity, which works with children in this country and overseas.

Bolton stars also did their bit to support Sport Relief.

Radio One DJ Sara Cox made it to the final of Only Fools On Horses, a celebrity competition won by TV presenter Jenni Falconer.

TV presenter Vernon Kay joined snooker ace Steve Davies in a Pot Black Special, and band McFly, featuring Danny Jones from Bolton, are releasing the official Sport Relief song a double A side of Please, Please and a cover version of the Queen song, Don't Stop Me Now, which is out today.
