A MOTHER who feared the worst when her son was seriously hurt by a dangerous driver has branded the existing law a “farce” and added her backing to The Bolton News Drive For Justice campaign.

Ann Coleman’s son, George, knows first-hand the devastation and heartbreak dangerous drivers can cause He was one of the group of friends mown down by dangerous driver Christopher Marr.

The 16-year-old suffered a fractured skull and burn-like injuries to the left side of his body when he came into contact with the road after Marr ploughed into him.

Yesterday, The Bolton News launched Drive For Justice, a campaign calling for the maximum sentence to be increased for dangerous drivers who seriously injure their victims to be increased.

The campaign comes after Judge Steven Everett imposed the toughest sentence available to him on Marr — which was 26 months.

The family is backing our campaign and has signed the petition, which will be presented to the Government.

Mrs Coleman, of Bromley Cross, said: “We do not want this to happen to anyone else.

“When we arrived at the scene we did not know what to think.

“It was a scene of carnage seeing the bodies on the ground, it was our worst nightmare.

“We are glad Marr got the maximum sentence, but it is a farce you can do so much damage yet only get 26 months.”

It took five hours to clean George’s wounds with a toothbrush on the night the crash happened — August 22 — and last week he pulled a piece of windscreen out of his head.

Despite his injuries, he has been determined to start his A-levels at Turton sixth form so he does not get behind.

However, the teenager, who loves sport, has been forced to drop PE because of his injuries.

George said: “Obviously the judge wanted to give him more and he deserved more.

“It is a good idea to start a campaign.

“It is just wrong what he has done yet he has only got a short sentence.

“He will be out in 12 months.

“It was very serious, but it could have been so much worse so easily.”

George’s friend, Devon Foster, is facing a long road to recovery.

She has fracture that runs from ear to ear under the front of her eyes, a cracked bone in her back, a bruised kidney, a fractured right arm and an ankle injury, as well as numerous cuts and bruises and damage to her sight and hearing.

She has also backed the Drive For Justice campaign.
