BOLTON West MP Ruth Kelly has been invited to speak at a meeting organised by a campaign group trying to improve communities across the country.

Local Works, which is behind the campaign for a Sustainable Communities Bill, is calling for new legislation to be passed which will enable local people to make decisions about matters that affect their communities.

The group is hoping to hold a meeting in Bolton in October and has invited Ruth Kelly, who is the Secretary of State for Communities, to speak in support of their calls.

Ron Bailey, campaign co-ordinator, said: "Community decline is hitting hard everywhere. In the last decade, Britain has lost a fifth of its post offices, a quarter of its independent grocery stores and a quarter of its bank branches.

"There are knock-on environmental impacts as people are forced to drive further and community life suffers, too. This Bill will reverse that by giving people power to make decisions which affect their local life."
