WE make no apology for returning to the subject of firefighters. Today the Bolton Evening News has launched a campaign to help reduce the number of hoax calls made to the fire service and to catch those who make the calls.

If you log on to our website www.boltoneveningnews.co.uk you will be able to listen to recordings of an emergency call made by a hoaxer. There will be one new recording added every day until Friday.

If you recognise the voice of any of the callers, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Hoax callers traced through the website will be prosecuted.

As the fire service points out, malicious calls cost a lot of money in wasted time and could delay the service's response to a genuine call which could have fatal consequences for an innocent victim.

If lives were lost, it would be on the conscience of the hoax caller for the rest of his or her life.

Hoax callers are often young children who do not think through what the consequences of their actions could be, but many of the malicious calls are made by adults and they really should know better.
